Cambodia Gambling Halls

[ English ]

There is a captivating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den betting is illegal. Eight casinos are based in a relatively small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime spot, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, financing sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and although visas are apparently required to cross, there are means around this, as is real of most borders.

The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge casino, features 150 slots and 60 table games. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machines and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and 66 of the normal tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive resort and hotel building that contains a number of comforts in addition to the gambling hall, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 table games.
